Re:Visit - Cofresi, Vibe Street, and Kaptain plus A Few Words With Lucid Vision

Another night of dancing is in the books for weekly Re:Search Wednesdays at Cervantes. This week was none other than the drum-master himself, Cofresi. With local favorite, DJ Mikey Thunder providing the beats for those trickling in from the crisp November air and a lineup consisting of Vibe Street and Kaptain, I already knew it was going to be a special night of music.

Vibe Street’s Ben Davis is one of those artists who has been fortunate enough to continue coming back to Cervantes and always throws down one memorable set after another. Last Wednesday’s performance was a shining example of that. Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom was yet again filled with familiar faces, scene regulars, and industry folk alike who all wanted to come out and support the night. While Potent Production's newest addition was wowing us with new music and multiple performers by his side, I ran into Arja Adair (Bass Physics), Kevin Donahue (SunSquabi) and Dalton Kieta (Lucid Vision). A true testament to the star-power Cervantes can bring out any given night.

Bass Physics ended up shredding with Cofresi during the headline set, performing their newest single, “Limitless” together. Kevin Donahue of ‘Squabi spoke to me about upcoming shows and anticipations for the months ahead, but more importantly just how influential Cervantes has been for himself and so many other artists. He especially made it a point to note that Cervantes is a special place where musicians are given a real opportunity to continually showcase their hard work and get the attention they so deserve. Essentially, Cervantes has become a pinnacle venue in Denver for artists to achieve growth and we’re forever thankful for that. Kieta, AKA Lucid Vision, was there spreading his signature, infectious smile and showing proper respect and support before he’s given the spotlight at this week's, Re:Search Wednesday. More on that to come.

Now, anyone who has had the privilege of being able to see Ben Cofresi perform knows that this man is dedicated, passionate, and downright talented. I mean this guy can really perform. There’s no doubt that he puts his absolute all into every performance! He even went so hard that he broke his drumsticks in the first 15 minutes of the performance, having to call out for someone backstage to grab his spares while he continued annihilating the drums with the broken sticks. Last week, you may have seen the video surface from his 30-minute set in the pouring rain! He’s just fun as hell to watch.

The night closed off with a late set from local artist Kaptain. Stephen Kaplan has only recently moved to Denver to further pursue the funk-lovin', amazing music crowd of The Mile High City. He took his usual act further by adding a guitarist on stage with him, which for like so many other producers, provided a perfect addition to his set. Jarrod Guaderrama performed with Kaplan the entire time. They started us off right with a downright funky twist on Steppanwolf’s, “Magic Carpet Ride” which immediately let the crowd know NOT to go anywhere, as there was still a lot more dancing to be had. They also performed the new single, “In A World Ever Changing” and an unreleased track titled, "Running Out Of Time" giving us a glimpse into what the future holds for Kaptain. The verdict is in, and the future looks bright. Luckily for you guys, you can catch this rising artist first thing in 2020 as he opens for Tnertle, alongside the likes of Melody Lines and Telemetry on January 10th. Tickets and info are available for that show here.

Make sure not to miss next week’s Re:Search as Lucid Vision co-headlines with Modern Measure with support from Gravitrax. Kieta of Lucid Vision spent a few minutes away from the studio this week to talk to us about the upcoming show. “I’m switching up the set quite a bit on this one. I’ve been making a ton of new music that’s a little bit more extreme from what I normally do. Instead of being in the middle area, I’ve been going more high energy, almost Bassnectar-ish, heavy dance vibe. But then on the other side, I’ve been going way softer and more melodic than what you’re used to from Lucid Vision” Keita told us. One thing you can probably guess is he’ll play his brand new single which he just put out yesterday, “Happy Together.”

One of the signature things about Denver is that everyone hustles… hard! Kieta is no exception to that rule. Like most musicians and Denverites in general, he has a secondary stream of income. His “day job” if you will, is similar to many in the sense that it’s at a restaurant, but unique in the way that he can intertwine his music career by actually performing at the restaurant itself! Once a week you can catch Kieta drop DJ sets at Hapa Sushi, where he focuses on a more hip-hop oriented vibe. Sushi Vision? Lucid Sushi? Eh, neither really work, but we think stuffing your face with one of Hapa’s “Multiple Orgasm” Rolls while Lucid Vision fills your ears with Hip Hop, Glitch Hop, or any kind of “hop” really, sounds like a pretty good time. We won’t tell you what night you can find Lucid Vision at Hapa, for that, you’ll have to ask him yourself tomorrow night at Cervantes. Tell him we sent you.

You can find the tickets for tomorrow’s Re:Search here.
