Now, I know we are all sad that the summer festival season has officially come to an end; now that the cold is rolling in and the dark haze of winter is looming in the near distance. But never fear! The teams at Cervantes’ and Sonic Bloom have put together a mini-fest that will take up Cervantes Ballroom, as well as The Other Side for a dual-venue event. Created in the reflection of Sonic Bloom’s vision, Sonic Blossom will be a show featuring a mix of artists from years past and a few favorites from the 2019 lineup. In the words of Sonic Bloom owner and main organizer Jamie Janover, “Sonic Blossom is it’s own annual fall indoor dual-venue mini-fest complete with performers, visuals, lasers, aerialists, live painters, vendors, food and multiple stages. SONIC BLOOM is a community. This gives us a chance to keep people connected even when the weather is not ideal at Hummingbird Ranch” (More from Janover below). Razor-sharp sets from the likes of Bluetech, Spoonbill, Dynohunter, The Librarian, Lapa and Janover himself are all highly anticipated. I highly recommend you get your tickets now because they are flying off the proverbial shelves. Sonic Blossom is a chance to escape hibernation mode and return to a simpler time of music, dancing, and those carefree festival antics. Suffice it to say, something very special is in store for this Friday.

The SharedViews team can’t wait to cover Sonic Blossom and rejoin with a big chunk of our festival family; reviving the community we build every summer during the circuit. We got the chance to talk with Bluetech and The Librarian before Friday to talk about music and why this event is so special to the artists and everyone who attends. Quite a few people told me how excited they are to see such a talented handful of artists, especially at one of the best venues in Denver. The production teams are working hard to present an all-encompassing night of immersive visuals and drowning acoustics. This event gives you a chance to go back and forth between venues, checking out any or all of the sets that you desire to see. It promises to be the kind of event where you stand in the center of the crowd, in awe and absolute euphoria. You know the feeling when you sporadically start getting goosebumps because there's nowhere you’d rather be.

Originating from Boulder, Colorado, Dynohunter has discovered their musical niche and risen to a pinnacle of potential right here in their home state. They like to describe themselves as a breath of fresh air, giving life to the electronic scene. Dynohunter has been a part of the Sonic Bloom community since 2012, back when the event was held in Georgetown, CO, they’ve played the festival every other year since then as well as at several of the intermittent Sonic Blossom parties. They strive to impress during live shows and sustain a sound as tight at their recorded tracks. This along with their eclectic sound, encompassing aspects of tribal, techno, jazz, jam and funk music, is why they are received so well by every audience they perform for and invited back again and again.

SharedViews: How did you discover what has become your signature sound and individual dynamic as a music group?

Sophia Clark of DynoHunter: “It has taken time, years of refining the sound, experimenting and exploring and seeking out new inspirations, finding a balance between evolving and refining the sound. It’s all about making music that's true to yourself and resonants with your soul.”

SharedViews: What sets your live performances apart from other musicians?

Sophia Clark of DynoHunter: “We all grew up playing instruments first and then got into electronic music composition and production after that. We work hard to create a live sound that is tight and precise, but we also leave room for improvisation and solos at certain points which helps make each performance unique. We also DJ transition between songs and therefore don’t stop between songs which gives our sets a flow and growing momentum similar to a House DJ.”

The Librarian is somewhat of a mythical presence throughout the electronic scene; she is a bass legend among those who have seen her live or are very familiar with her music. However, she is apt at honing her craft without protruding an egocentric attitude. The Librarian has risen to achieve a humble success story. She attributes her growth to the many opportunities that have been stacked upon one another over the years, creating her tower of achievements. The Librarian is the kind of artist who embraces the moment at every show, big or small. She is always looking for new inspiration in an attempt to not only surprise her listeners with her music but also herself. Constantly striving for something new is how you stay one step ahead.

SharedViews: You have such a unique, bass-oriented style, how and when did you discover that was your niche?

The Librarian: “I was first drawn to bass music in the mid 2000’s when UK dubstep was just bubbling up. It caught me instantly and I was drawn to the new sounds rooted in low end. I still am drawn to the low-end frequencies that first inspired me, but over the years my taste in genres has expanded and the genres themselves have evolved.”

SharedViews: What gives you an upper hand in your field and makes you stick out amongst others in the scene, especially when it comes to bass music?

The Librarian: “I’d say that my wide interest in music sets me apart, my library is always growing. My sets are constantly evolving and I’m always digging for new sounds and new artists that inspire me. I’m a DJ first and foremost and a producer second. I love crafting a DJ set and also having the freedom to leave the plan to respond to the energy of the crowd in front of me. We’re all in it together.”

One of the best things about SONIC BLOOM is the community and the overall goals and outreach that come from the event. Each year that community grows bigger, stronger, and more connected. Festival creator Jamie Janover had a few words about the success of such.

SharedViews to Jamie Janover: Walk me through your experience of the festival, crowds, culture, music and overall take away from how it’s put together.

Jamie Janover: “That’s not one question and one answer… I live in what I call “Festival Earth”, in that I would like to see the whole planet be more festival-like and celebrate the diversity of faiths like we do styles of music. I see festival on a big picture, grand level but as for SONIC BLOOM it is very deep with community and people that are dedicated and really good at what they do to make it all happen… I just went to my 21st Burning Man in a row and have had a couple of decades of doing anywhere from a dozen to two dozen festivals each year so I guess you could say I’m a lifer.”

SharedViews: Sonic Bloom has amazing visuals and stage production; what can people expect from your set (or just in general) when it comes to those aspects this Friday? Any unique light installations, etc.?

Janover: “This one will be super epic as we have Mindbeam Productions doing an epic laser show AND Awaken The Night is bringing in their state-of-the-art Funktion-One sound system just for this show the same folks who did the best sound I have ever heard at any festival at SONIC BLOOM’s quadraphonic Yoga D’Om at this year’s SONIC BLOOM. Spoonbill and Bluetech are both genius producers and on the PA we are bringing in, will be among the best sounding tracks anyone has heard… period. Also, Lapa and I plan on doing a few tracks together in the transition between our sets!”

Friday night will be filled with an array of genres and stimulating vibrations for your ear holes. We can’t wait to share this experience with everyone who attends, it will not only be a taste of one of the best festivals this state has to offer but a collective of like-minded individuals dancing the night away. For those who love the shows at Sonic Blossom, it will be a delicious little taste of what’s to come during Sonic Bloom 2020. This means, start planning your trip to the festival at Hummingbird Ranch next Summer and get those early tier tickets. With good music, good people and four days of unforgettable adventure at the base of the mountains, it’s never too early to get a jumpstart!
