This Re:Search Wednesday continued a long streak of impressive shows and what we see as the series’ greatest strength: making space for the endless variety of electronic music being explored these days. The lineup this past week included MOUR, a project by Random Rab that explored his darker side, the uplifting sounds of VOLO, and Plantrae as the headliner, who graced us with his earthy harmonies.

The Other Side was well-packed for resident host Jordan Polovina’s set and filled out even more for MOUR. Random Rab fans and newbies alike were getting down to his ambient and bewitching songs. I don’t know if you could call it a disguise since we were well aware of who the artist actually was, but as MOUR he dons a silk cape, dad shades and a scarf wrapped around his head and mouth. It could use some work but the aesthetic oddly fit with the strange blend of emotions his music expressed.

Plantrae serenaded us into the AM with sweeping viola played live over his natural percussion-driven production. It reminded me instantly of Emancipator, and casual fans of each might even mistake one for the other. But Plantrae seems to bridge more electronic samples into his style while maintaining the acoustic, orchestral energy. He brings his sounds from the Pacific Northwest - you could almost see the lush green hills and fog rise around him as he played. It was a good soundtrack for losing yourself in thought, memory, or just the company of a loved one. His set made for a pleasant air on The Other Side, as people swayed and smiled together.

Volo kept us going with a slightly more upbeat tone. He draws influence from ambient projects like Boards of Canada while incorporating the same bounciness that recalls Odesza’s older work. Some of his songs are highly cinematic and border on epic, and there’s this prevailing optimism in his style. A very positive note to end on for this Re:Search.

Catch us tomorrow for another Re:Search Wednesday as we fall under the spell of The Magician, and hear the many stylings of Denver’s own Lea Luna and Tri-Tip! Tickets can still be found right here.
