Telemetry (noun):

  1. the process of recording and transmitting the readings of an instrument

  2. a live electronic band based in Denver

Telemetry (the second definition) is comprised of three phenomenal musicians: Nic Deyo on drums, Cameron Crumpler on guitar / keys, and Jeff Barlow on bass / synths. The trio mix psychedelic rock, jam, jazz, bass, and more in their live instrumentation to forge a delightful space-inspired sonic journey.

This past year has seen them play all over the state of Colorado. They opened up for Evanoff at Hodi’s Half Note in Fort Collins and also at Old Town Pub in Steamboat Springs. They released their Night Drive EP and were part of the official Papadosio Red Rocks after party - both at Your Mom’s House in Denver. They then went on to perform at One Vibration in Hesperus as well as absolutely throwing down at Sonic Bloom in Rye.

We spoke with Telemetry to learn more about them as a band and what you can expect to see from them in the near future.

Shared Views: How was Telemetry formed?

Telemetry: Nic Deyo (Drums/Production) is the founder and only original member of the band, formed in 2016. It has always been a three-piece band, however, there have been some line up changes. Cameron Crumpler (Keys/Guitar/Production) joined the band late 2017, and most recently Jeff Barlow (Bass/Production) joined in early 2018.

SharedViews: If you could describe your sound, how would you?

Telemetry: We have always loved this quote by Ellie Herring (303 Magazine), "Their sound has just the right mix of danceable beats and psychedelic explorations — a paradisiac cocktail of sound sure to send you to outer space.” Telemetry's sound is always evolving, sometimes we don't even know what to call it. We have so many influences and backgrounds between the three of us. Let’s go with 'Live Electronic'.

SharedViews: I know you listed some of your artist inspirations on your Facebook - Emancipator, STS9, Tipper, Tycho, Shpongle, Lotus. What inspirations do you have outside of music? Places, experiences, people, etc?

Telemetry: I would say life, spirituality, love, nature, our friends and family, and the pursuit of something greater than ourselves.

SharedViews: What does the creative process look like for Telemetry?

Telemetry: Interesting question. It's not a short process that's for sure. As we said before we are a live electronic band - we incorporate computers with live instruments, which can be challenging at points, but more than rewarding at the end. Our writing process usually starts with one or two of us in Abelton. After the group has heard it and has had input/suggestions, we make the changes. We then start incorporating live instruments during practice. After we do this we normally go back into Ableton and take out (or add) parts and computer sounds, depending on what works and what doesn't. Sometimes we edit a track 5 times, sometimes 20 plus. Each song is very unique.

SharedViews: You had an absolute killer performance at Sonic Bloom. What are some festivals you would love to perform at - outside of Colorado?

Telemetry: Thank you! All of them! We would love to play Camp Bisco, Electric Forest, Gem & Jam, Lighting In A Bottle, Summer Camp, Red Rocks, Hulaween and so many more!

SharedViews: When do you think we will get a full length Telemetry album?

Telemetry: We are focusing on releasing some singles very soon, followed by another EP. We love the idea of a complete album as a concept, but they're just not as effective in promotion in this digital, short attention-span style of world. We did release a full length album in 2018 called "Mirage" though.

SharedViews: What are some of your goals for the new year and new decade?

Telemetry: 2019 was by far the best year Telemetry has ever had. We have high expectations and motivation for 2020 and beyond. We are going to release more original music, play bigger shows/ festivals, tour more out of state, and be the best we can be.
