We love showcases! One of the last Re:Search Wednesdays (before the switch to Re:Search Thursdays) featured a showcase from The Rust Music featuring 5AM Trio, MALAKAI, and LuSiD. The Rust Music is a growing blog, label, production company, and management agency based in New York City with a roster of up-and-coming genre-bending artists.

After Re:Search resident host Jordan Polovina, MALAKAI took the stage. MALAKAI is the musical project of Brooklyn-based producer, Malakai Linden. Put on the map following Tipsgiving at Kings Theatre in Brooklyn last year, his downtempo set was a deliberate start to the night. With TYGRIS joining him on a couple of tracks to provide some scratching, MALAKAI’s hip-hop inspired bass made The Other Side THE side of Cervantes’ that you wanted to be at.

5AM, or Sam Andrus, was up next with ZONE Drums and TYGRIS joining him. When the three of them get together, they go by 5AM Trio. As he got on stage, 5AM took to the mic: “So this is what you guys do every Wednesday? Pretty cool.” Denver is certainly blessed with the Re:Search series put on by Euphonic Conceptions at Cervantes’ every week, and “pretty cool” might be the understatement of the year.

5AM Trio is a beautiful blend of bass and jazz and soul, creating a fusion of sound that you can’t nail down with just one genre. In fact, there was a point when TYGRIS started guitar picking in a way that is more reminiscent of jamtronica. At one point, Maya Elise joined 5AM Trio on stage for a few tracks to provide vocals - including performing their collab, ‘Floating’. She added an angelic, jazzy element to the trio, even scatting at points. The 5AM fans were rampant, one shouting “I AM SO SATISFIED”.

LuSiD rounded out the evening with his vinyl set. LuSiD is the auditory offspring of St. Louis-based Dean McDonnell. He is known for his 100% live and improvised approach. With a wide array of instruments including guitar, bass, and didgeridoo as well as vinyl scratching, LuSiD live loops to create songs in real-time. In fact, according to Dean, he can do the most with a guitar. This set, while featuring all original music (of which he has TONS and is sitting on even more - two albums’ worth!), was a fraction of what LuSiD is capable of considering it featured no live instrumentation. Next time he comes to Denver, be prepared for LuSiD to knock your socks off (even more).

Overall, solid display from The Rust here in Denver! We can’t wait to see what the next Re:Search show has in store!
