Shuj Roswell
Shuj Roswell is the musical creation of Denver's own, Mark A. Cooley. Releasing his debut album, Flying High Above The World, on Michal Menert's Super Best Records label in 2015, he carefully curates vinyl samples of 60's and 70's funk and soul as well as obscure movie soundtracks to use as a foundation for his production. Fusing traditional sample based hip-hop with warm analog synthesis and hard hitting beats sets the table for a sound Mark has come to call, “Funktronadelic”. Mark is accompanied on stage by drummer, Eric Imbrosciano. Eric comes from a hip-hop, funk, and jazz background originated from his early years gigging in the New York music scene. He injects a whole new vibe into the Shuj Roswell sound from laid back hip-hop grooves to drum & bass breaks. Eric also performs with the four-piece funk ensemble, Jaden Carlson Band and the jazz-fusion quartet, Space Orphan.
I take a very organic and somewhat unorthodox approach to the way I write and produce my brand of electronic music. Instead of endless bars of repeating loops, the majority of my tracks follow a more traditional template that incorporates musical phrasing. I think it makes each song a little more accessible to those not so familiar with electronic music...
I didn’t have a title for this song when I wrote it, but that quote sums up the vibe. It’s like that feeling you have when you’re going out with your squad and you’re not going to hold anything back. It’s 100 all night! It’s pulling out your alter ego. “I’m gonna run wild all night long. I’m gonna be Ric Flair All Night Long.”
“Into the far unknown, I’m all alone.” The phrase repeats itself fading off into the distance as an arpeggiated synth line layered with modulated risers builds us into the drop that kicks off the song.
The “Blast Off” sample I used in the intro was discovered while attending a Phish show in 2014. It’s from a song they cover called, Martian Monster from the Disney Halloween record, Chilling, Thrilling Sounds Of The Haunted House.
The following is written from Shuj Roswell’s, Mark A. Cooley himself. It’s an in-depth look into the making and meaning of the first track of his newest album, both titled “Setting Fire To The Stars”. We’ll be sure to keep you up to date as Cooley will continue to post individual editorials like this for all of the songs from the new album. Enjoy!
Michal and I first met in the winter of 2013 during the Snowball music festival in Winter Park, CO. As many of you already know, he's very approachable. We had a short conversation in which I mentioned seeing him several years earlier at the Gothic theater when his laptop crashed mid set. As I recall, he violently threw the laptop to the floor then addressed the few of us that were there saying something like, "I guess that's the end of my set," before angrily walking off stage. We laughed about it and that was that.
